Why the State Board of Education Matters
The State Board of Education (SBOE) sets policies and standards that shape the future of Texas public schools. Barbara Denson is running because she believes these decisions must be guided by truth, transparency, and a commitment to every student’s success.
Here’s what the SBOE is responsible for:
• Setting Curriculum Standards
The SBOE defines what students are expected to learn through the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Barbara believes these standards must reflect facts—not political agendas.
• Reviewing and Adopting Instructional Materials
The board approves textbooks and classroom resources. Barbara has already helped expose biased content in science materials and will fight for accuracy across all subjects.
• Establishing Graduation Requirements
The SBOE determines what students must complete to earn a diploma. Barbara supports clear, rigorous standards that prepare students for real-world success.
• Overseeing the Texas Permanent School Fund
With over $56 billion in assets, this fund supports public education for more than 5.5 million students. Barbara brings hands-on experience and fiscal responsibility to this critical role.
• Appointing Board Members to Military Reservation and Special School Districts
These appointments impact unique communities across Texas. Barbara will ensure they reflect integrity and a commitment to educational excellence.
• Providing Final Review of Rules Proposed by the State Board for Educator Certification
The SBOE has the final say on rules that shape teacher qualifications. Barbara believes educators deserve clear standards and strong support.
• Reviewing Charter School Applications
The board can approve or veto new public charter schools. Barbara supports high standards and transparency for every school—traditional or charter.
Barbara Denson is stepping forward to protect educational integrity and ensure Texas students are taught with honesty, not ideology. Because when we teach truth, we build futures.
